Regarding François Pompon’s white bears
(see Gazette No. 44 of 2022, page 20), traceability—
not on the ice floe but in terms
of provenance—is essential.

The one reproduced on page 108 is a first and unique
reduction in Carrara marble, dated 1923.
It was acquired by the current owner’s father from Doctor Miguet, veterinarian at the Jardin des Plantes menagerie, and
has been kept in the same family ever since. It is therefore imbued with respectability, and Ms. Colas, the
sculptor’s specialist, will include it in her Catalogue Raisonné
.

The plantigrade readily accepted a bid of €245,000.
