FRIENDS OF THE TROYES MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

On Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 6 PM at the Museum of Modern Art in Troyes, Aube, the lecture by Sylvie Buisson, organized by the Friends of the A-MAM, was a great success.

Why did Paris turn these three friends—Modigliani, Soutine, and Foujita—into kings of figurative Modernity? Why, coming from Italy, Japan, and Russia, did they choose Paris? Why did they listen only to themselves and their art within a melting pot as marvelous as it was ruthless in Montmartre and Montparnasse? Why did they transgress Academicism there to establish such a magnificent and singular aesthetic inspired by the Old Masters? Through what new lenses did they deconstruct and recompose the world, their world? How does the School of Paris, which they helped make immortal, stand out among the 20th-century avant-gardes? This lecture, extensively illustrated with works by the main figures of 20th-century art—starting from Cézanne—culminated in the evocation of the stay that Modigliani, Soutine, and Foujita spent together with their dealer Zborowski in Cagnes in 1918, between confinement and friendly confrontations.
