The Expert

The only son of Geneviève Dupin (Paris 1935 – Janville-sur-Juine 2021) and Jean-Pierre Vasarhelyi, known as Yvaral (Paris 1934 – Paris 2002), Pierre-Victor-Serge Vasarhelyi is the only grandson of Klára Spinner (Budapest 1909 – Annet-sur-Marne 1990) and Gyözö Vásárhelyi, known as Victor Vasarely (Pécs 1906 – Paris 1997). Born on October 4, 1960, in Paris, Pierre Vasarely ensures the family's continuity. A 1984 graduate of the Institut d’études politiques d’Aix-en-Provence, he worked for the Vasarely Foundation (Gordes Didactic Museum and the Aix-en-Provence Architectonic Center) from 1985 to 1992 and from 1994 to 1996. Under the terms of the will dated April 11, 1993, Pierre Vasarely was appointed universal legatee and holder of the moral rights to his grandfather's work. An exhibition curator, he writes numerous texts and gives several interviews to the daily and specialized press regarding Op Art and Kinetic Art. He also speaks at numerous symposiums and conferences. He co-authored two books: Vasarely, une saga dans le siècle, with Philippe Dana, Calmann-Lévy Editions in 2019, and Vasarely, Le Pillage, with Laetitia Sariroglou, Fage Editions in 2021. A member of the Union Française des Experts since 2003 as a specialist in Vasarely's work and optical-kinetic art, Pierre Vasarely became the president of the Association for the Defense and Promotion of Vasarely's Work (2004–2009). Since 2009, he has chaired the Vasarely Foundation, which was recognized as being in the public interest in 1971, classified as a Historic Monument in 2013, and designated a Musée de France since 2020. Patron of Pécs 2010, European Capital of Culture, he founded the Victor Vasarely International Prize for Art in Public Spaces in Vasarely's birthplace, together with András Horváth. In 2016, he founded the Vasarely Foundation Prize for Digital Arts with Pierre-Emmanuel Reviron. A member of the Institut Art & Droit since 2011, he was appointed Honorary Consul of Hungary for the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in 2012. The University of Pécs awarded him the title of doctor honoris causa in 2013. In 2015, he became a member of the European Cultural Parliament. The following year, he founded the Vasarely Foundation International Prize for Digital Arts. On July 4, 2017, the former Minister of Culture, Frédéric Mitterrand, presented him with the insignia of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.
