Ugo Vasarely in charge of the NFT project at the Fondation Vasarely

Financing the restoration of works at the Fondation Vasarely [excerpts from an article by Clément Perruche in Les Échos, 2024]

In total, 12 works are being offered for sale as NFTs by the Foundation. Six of these works are architectural integrations that adorn the Foundation's building. The other six are works by the Hungarian artist housed by the institution. The NFTs will be sold as visual works. Two unique images will be sold at €30,000. Four visuals will be sold in editions of 15 units at €9,000. And six visuals in editions of 100 will be sold at €600. With the funds raised, the foundation will finance the restoration of the actual works. Each purchaser will thus become a patron of the foundation. "These NFTs will be dynamic. That is, the digital image of the works will evolve as the restoration of the actual works progresses," explains Ugo Vasarely, the artist's great-grandson, who is in charge of the project. The restoration of each work will be reflected in the NFT's metadata through a smart contract.

With a maximum price of €30,000, the Fondation Vasarely is far from the astronomical sums that certain "native" NFTs can reach—those works of art that exist only in digital form and are sold as NFTs. In March 2021, the digital work "Everydays: The First 5,000 Days" by artist Beeple was sold for $69.3 million by Christie's. A record.
