The Artist

A free and modern woman, Chana Orloff (1888 Ukraine – Tel Aviv 1968) is one of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century. She arrived in Paris where she was hired as an apprentice dressmaker at the Paquin haute couture house in 1910. In 1911, she placed second in the entrance examination for the École des Arts Décoratifs, created her first sculpture (a portrait of her grandmother, from a photograph), and frequented the Académie Marie Vassiliev in Montparnasse, along with Picasso, Foujita, Apollinaire, among others... Modigliani became her friend, to whom she introduced Jeanne Hébuterne. Modigliani created the portrait of Chana Orloff in which is written in Hebrew: Chana, daughter of Raphael. She exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1913; her brief marriage to Ary Justman, a victim of the Spanish flu in 1919, left her prematurely widowed. She lived only for art and her young son Elie, born in 1918. A portraitist of all Paris, she received the Legion of Honor and French nationality in 1925 and, the following year, moved to Villa Seurat. A tireless worker, she took refuge in Switzerland in 1941 and upon her return in 1945 discovered the looting of her studio by the Nazis. She reconnected with Israel, exhibited there, and enjoyed fame until December 1968.

The Expert

Her granddaughter Ariane Tamir is dedicated to cataloging, archiving, and preserving her work. Together with her brother Eric Justman, she is committed to maintaining the studio in its original state, where publications, archives, and the collection of sculptures are carefully displayed. An appraisal and authentication service for owners of a work by Chana Orloff will only be provided after a physical and thorough examination of the work. For any appraisal or special service, it is necessary to contact the Ateliers Chana-Orloff: info@chana-orloff.org Appraisals are preferably conducted at the studio, sometimes at collectors' homes, but also in more unlikely locations, particularly in customs storage facilities at Roissy.
