Natural history documents primarily consist of scientific drawings, engravings, and books, as well as related objects. A collection of shells, a unicorn tusk, a taxidermied crocodile, animal teeth, bones, and fossilized animals... These are the types of objects found in what is known as a Cabinet of Curiosities. Today, the Cabinet is often reduced to a display case or a piece of furniture whose drawers contain countless scientific creations that have fallen into oblivion. This expression is now used to describe the piece of furniture whose drawers hold an infinite number of scientific creations forgotten by time. In the past, these were vast, cluttered rooms within grand estates since the Renaissance... today, Cabinets can be arranged in more confined spaces, discreetly tucked away within an interior, in display cases, on shelves, or in secret drawers. They fulfill the desire to know, to see, to understand, and to exhibit the strange, the curious, and often the unknown. And as long as eclectic collections attract new enthusiasts, even the humblest of shelves can take pride in such a title. The contribution of an expert in this field is essential to identify, contextualize, authenticate, appraise, and assist the amateur collector in enhancing and preserving the most unusual and extraordinary items submitted to them.
