The Expert
A graduate of the École du Louvre (modern sculpture section) in 1973, Liliane Colas specialized in animal art after completing a thesis and co-authoring (with Catherine Chevillot, Anne Pingeot, and Laure de Margerie) the Catalogue raisonné of the work of François Pompon, animal sculptor (1855-1933), published by Gallimard/ Electa/ Réunion des musées nationaux in 1995 for the traveling exhibition ''François Pompon, 1855-1933'' in Dijon, Paris, Roubaix, and Rodez. In 2001, the Musée d’Orsay commissioned her to appraise a collection of Pompon's works acquired by the Gunma Museum of Art in Japan. In 2002, at the request of his heir and custodian of the studio, sculptor Étienne Audfray, she published the biography and Catalogue raisonné of the work of Armand Petersen, an animal sculptor and emulator of Pompon (1886-1969) – refer to the monograph signed by Mustapha Chelbi, "Étienne Audfray L’émotion par le volume" (Emotion through Volume), published by Éditions Finzi, 2004. As an art historian specializing in animal art from the so-called Golden Age of the 1930s, she writes for exhibitions, catalogues, and articles, prepares entries for sales, and responds to requests by drawing on her personal documentation and archives, which she enriches through the discovery of unknown works that broaden her research. As an expert on sculptors Armand Petersen and François Pompon, Liliane arbitrates a delicate situation concerning the latter. The situation is complex, as Pompon's work is "polluted" by numerous posthumous casts and reproductions, and the proliferation of abusive editions requires great vigilance, a perfect knowledge of the artist, and extreme analytical rigor to detect them. Furthermore, the misappropriation of Pompon's legacy to the French State has created a complicated legal problem that hinders many transactions. This is why collectors, dealers, and auction houses have a strong interest in calling upon Liliane Colas's undisputed experience, her seriousness, and her independence.Bibliography
