The Expert

Director of the Perahia gallery for over 30 years, Robert Perahia represents the second generation of a Parisian gallerist family. He was admitted to the French Union of Experts in 1998 for the pictorial and lithographic work of Louis Toffoli, of whom he was the dealer, friend, and author of a Catalogue Raisonné in June 1997. His professional and friendly relationship with Louis Toffoli led to numerous exhibitions. Furthermore, the Toffoli Museum, inaugurated in 1995 in Charenton-le-Pont where the artist lived, called upon his expertise at its opening regarding the selection and placement of the exhibited works. He was also entrusted with the compilation of the museum's collection catalog. Robert Perahia also published Louis Toffoli's lithographs in the last years of his life and authored the catalogue raisonné, produced in collaboration with the artist over two long years. In collaboration with his beneficiaries, he is responsible for the continuity and respect of Louis Toffoli's work. Robert Perahia is today the recognized expert concerning Toffoli's work, both for his technical mastery of Louis Toffoli's pictorial work and his knowledge of his catalog. Individuals and professionals from various backgrounds regularly seek his expert advice.

The Painter

Louis Toffoli was a French painter born in Trieste (Italy) on October 16, 1907, to an Italian father and a Slovenian mother, and died on February 18, 1999, in Paris. Successively Austro-Hungarian, then Italian, then French, and thus a European ahead of his time, Toffoli declared himself "from Trieste" and signed his paintings neither Luigi nor Louis, but simply Toffoli. Toffoli's canvases immediately captivate the viewer; the light is transparent, passing through all forms, seeming to emanate from the paintings, and the impression of purity it creates establishes a deep intimacy with the characters. Louis Toffoli sought an unusual inner truth; the vibrant colors and lights in his paintings make the motifs on the canvas sing and delight spectators. Louis Toffoli used various techniques for his works: oil painting, lithography, tapestries. The subjects are thus found on different media, with light appearing differently depending on the support. Louis Toffoli dedicated a period of his work to the study of light in lithography. He also dedicated a work to the lithographer's craft with "La Presse à bras" (The Hand Press).
